Ronnie Loses Irish Masters Title

Ronnie O'Sullivan has been stripped of his Benson & Hedges Irish Masters title and the 61,130 first prize after failing a drug test. The test showed traces of cannabis.

Ken Doherty, who was originally beaten 9-3 by Ronnie in the final, has now been awarded the winner's cheque and the trophy. Doherty's runner-up prize of 27,712 will probably be returned to the sponsor.

Doc Martens Premier League

Ken Doherty won the 1998 Doc Martens Premier League by beating Jimmy White 10-2 in the final. The victory earned him 60,000 and it was his second success in this tournament.

In the semi-finals White defeated John Higgins 6-4 and Doherty beat Stephen Hendry 6-5, despite a 147 by the Scot. This was Hendry's record fifth competitive maximum.

Griffiths Rubbishes Fraud Allegations

TERRY GRIFFITHS LTD

PRESS RELEASE - IMMEDIATE - 1200 20th May 1998
GRIFFITHS RUBBISHES FRAUD ALLEGATIONS
SMEAR CAMPAIGN - WHOSE GOT EGG ON THEIR FACE NOW!

Terry Griffiths is not and never has been investigated by the Fraud Squad - Official. A spokesman for Somerset and Avon Police said "We have had a meeting with the WPBSA and the result of that meeting is we are not investigating any matters and never have had an investigation."

EGM requsition

Terry Griffiths, Steve Davis and Dennis Taylor are heading a campaign to remove the entire Board of the WPBSA, in order to put in motion a long overdue constitutional restructure of Snooker's archaic administration.

An EGM Requisition has been signed by: 1979 World Champion Terry Griffiths, 1985 World Champion Dennis Taylor, SIX times World Champion Steve Davis. Fellow requisitionists are SIX times World Champion Stephen Hendry, the newly crowned World Champion and World Number One John Higgins, World Number Three Ronnie O'Sullivan, former World Semi Finalist Tony Knowles and the popular Notts pro Jason Ferguson.

Smear campaign

Griffiths claims that he and his fellow requisitionists have been the victims of a "smear campaign". Griffiths said "I could quote countless examples of the dirty tricks campaign that is being waged against us." "All these matters are now the subject of legal issues and letters will be issued by our solicitors".

Griffiths continued "Public statements were made at a Members Meeting last week in an attempt to discredit me". "Documents were dispatched to all the Members of the WPBSA, which contained numerous inaccuracies and barely disguised innuendoes". "There were even claims that I, and Steve and Dennis were calling for this EGM, in order to secure ourselves paid jobs with the WPBSA".

"Finally, a so called "exclusive" was printed in a Sunday newspaper, which repeated these allegations and also brought my wife into the issue". "I am disgusted that anyone, for whatever motive, needs to stoop so low as to cause personal distress to my family and friends". "My call for an EGM was a perfectly correct constitutional right, it was a 'business decision'; I have no personal axes to grind, these issues are not about personalities that are about the future security of our sport."

Griff proves them all wrong

"Steve, Dennis and myself have sent out a "personal" letter to our members, which refutes the accusations leveled at us and contains our own PERSONAL SIGNED GUARANTEES that none of us will accept payment for what we are trying to achieve." "None of us have any wish to become Board Members of the WPBSA, it is a thankless job, but we all feel very strongly that we must stand up and be counted. Our game is in dire need of a total restructure and that is what we are trying to achieve."

"Regarding the allegations in the "Review of Board Affairs by Martyn Blake", I have sent out a package of documents to all the members which contain irrefutable evidence that these allegations were pure fabrication." "I would like to point out that the documents, which I kept for my own records, were all on file in Bristol and were easily accessible to Martyn Blake, so I must assume that, for whatever reason, he did not research his subject very thoroughly." Further information from Terry Griffiths: 01554 774494 or 01554 746686.

1979 World Champion, Terry Griffiths, salutes his multitude of fans in an emotional farewell to The Crucible in 1997.

Griffiths retired after a career spanning 18 years in the Top Sixteen in the World. He became WPBSA Director of Coaching in June 1996, resigning in March 1998.

Snooker legend dies age 84

Fred Davis O.B.E. 1913-1998

It is with great sadness that we learn of the death of Fred Davis on April 16 at his home in North Wales. Fred was the last link with the pre-war world of snooker. He was 12 years younger than his brother, the legendary Joe Davis and remained the only player to beat Joe on level terms, a feat he achieved four times. After Joe retired, Fred won the World title 8 times, saw snooker decline yet was still a goog enough player to compete with the best when the revival happened in the seventies. Indeed he was ranked as high as No.4 when the first world rankings were announced in 1976. Although he never reached another world final (other than the challenge matches of the mid '60s) he did reach the semi-final twice, 1969 and 1974, in pre Crucible days. He later won the hearts of millions of TV viewers when he reached the semis at the Crucible in 1978, losing 18-16 to Perrie Mans, just four months short of his 65th birthday. He continued to appear at the Crucible every year, except 1983 until his last match there, losing 10-4 to Bill Werbeniuk in 1984 at the age of 70. His record as the oldest to appear there is never likely to be beaten. He also returned to the game of billiards and won the world title in 1980 and 1981 the latter when he was 67, and became only the second player (Joe was the first) to capture both world titles. He always said he would never retire and continued for many years to enter the ranking tournaments. Lovers of the game were sad to see him losing match after match and sliding down the rankings. The influx of new professionals and the resulting arduous qualifying season at Blackpool began to prove too much. Finally in 1992 crippling arthritis was making it difficult for him to get round the table and he was forced to retire. He was, at the time, the oldest active professional sportsman in the world.

In 1977 he was honoured with the OBE for services to snooker and billiards.

Apart from anything else, he was such a charming man, loved and admired by all who met him and many millions who only new him from his appearances on television.

We will miss you Fred.

First Place: CAN$8,000 + entry & expenses for the 1998/99 Professional Tournaments

Report

The "Americas Tour" is a series of events, sponsored by the WPBSA, to promote the game of snooker in North America. The first event featured a purse of more than CAN$35,000 and attracted 9 former Canadian Amateur Champions (Bear, Chaperon, Clouthier, Galati, Natale, Sobala, Stevens, John White and Wood) and 9 players who have competed on the professional circuit (Bob Chaperon (1990 British Open chapion), Kirk Stevens, Gary Natale, Jeff White, John White, Tony Bolahood, Mario Morra, Jim Bear and Ted Guierrieri).

Spectators at the event witnessed an impressive performance by Kirk Stevens to win the inaugural event over runner-up, Gary Natale. In addition to the prize money, Kirk and Gary have won an all expenses paid trip to the UK to compete in the 98/99 professional tournaments.

The next event will be in May 1998. It will also send the winner and runner-up to compete professionally next year. Changes for the Next Season

The WPBSA are introducing a number of changes for the 1997/98 snooker season. First of all they are reducing the number of ranking tournaments from ten to eight. This means that the Thailand Classic and the European Open are out.

The other major change comes about in the qualification process. This season there will only be 96 competitors for each of the ranking events. They will include the top 64 on the official ranking list plus a group of 32 players qualifying from a few special tournaments this summer. There will be four events with the top eight from each going through. A player can take part in all of these tournaments if he wishes.

The qualifying matches takes place in England this year, but next season the WPBSA plans to hold the events throughout the world so that local players can get into the circuit more easily than before.

Several exemptions will be made. Players winning the World Championship are guaranteed a place on the tour for the next five years. Winners of the other ranking event will be guaranteed a place for the next two seasons.

The ranking system is also changing. Starting with the 1998 ranking list, all points amassed in the last two seasons will decide the ranking. Previously they added last season's points to half the points from the season before.

Ronnie O'Sullivan won the 1997 Dr Martens European League title with a 10-8 win over Stephen Hendry.

The final took place at the Diamond Centre in Irthlingborough, England and the winner's cheque was 60,000.
