General Info

The Snooker Chat Room is a place to chat with fellow snooker enthusiasts from all over the world. In order to make it easier for you to learn more about each other, all the participants have a bio page with info about themselves. Check the Bios section to find out how to set up your own bio.

To get started you must choose a username and a password. (Note: case sensitivity) The username must consist of alphanumeric characters, i.e. letters, digits and space. Don't forget your password! You'll need it later to set up your bio. If your browser supports cookies, you'll never have to log in again, as the Chat Room will recognize you when you return. Other users must enter their username and password every time they visit.

Once you're in, you'll notice that the Chat Room is divided into two windows; one in the top and one at the bottom. In the lower one you can write your messages, change your settings and edit your bio. The upper one displays the messages, and reloads at certain intervals, decided by the "Reload" setting. (You can also reload the message window by clicking the "Reload!" link) If your browser supports Java the message window can be set to reload only when a new message has arrived. The "Display" setting determines how many messages are to be shown. You can find out how to change your settings below.

Messages

The messages from all the chatters are shown in the message window. To write your own messages you need to write the text into the input box titled "Message." The message will be sent when you press return or push the "Submit" button. Your message will appear in the message window next time the window is reloaded.

Settings

It's possible to use a custom-made version of the Chat Room. More precisely, you can choose your own "Display", "Reload" and "Color" values. As mentioned before "Display" determines how many messages are to be shown every time and "Reload" says how often the message window is to be reloaded/updated. The default values are 15 and 10 respectively. "Color" is the background color of the messages in the message window.

If you choose 'Smart' as 'Reload' setting, the message window will be reloaded only when a new message has arrived. This is made possible by a Java applet.

Netscape users: Quit the browser, then add the following line to your prefs.js (or preferences.js) file:

user_pref("security.lower_java_network_security_by_trusting_proxies", true);
Then start the browser again and it should be OK.

If 'Never' is the current setting for "Reload", the message window is never updated. To get back to automatic reloading, you'll have to choose another option in the "Reload" list and press "Submit." After that you need to click the "Reload!" link for the change to be effectuated.

Because some browsers don't support cookies, some of you will have to click the "Reload!" link one time for the settings to work. When you click the this link the message window will be reloaded. From now on your personal settings will work.

If you want to change the settings, simply choose a value in any of the pull down menus and press the "Submit" button. Your settings will be used the next time the message window is reloaded.

Bios

As mentioned previously each user has his/her own bio. The first time you log in, it'll comprise of your username and nothing more. You need to press the "Edit" button if you want to register more information. Once you've pressed that button, a new separate window will appear. Here you can enter all the data you want; sex, birth date, a picture of yourself, your favourite player and more. If you want to include a picture you need to write its URL (web address, e.g. http://www.stud.ifi.uio.no/~hermunar/Img/me.gif). In case you don't have a URL you can also send the picture to me and I will include it for you. You don't have to fill in all the boxes. The only one required is the password box. After you have entered the password and the new info, simply press the "Submit" button to register the entries.

When you've been using the Chat Room for a while you might want to change your bio. All you have to do then is to press the "Edit" button once more and follow the same procedure.

If you want to read the bios of some other chatters, simply click their names in the message window and a separate page with a bio will appear. There's also a complete user list available. If you don't want the entire list you can check out the list of users with info in their bios.
