Doherty remains the only world champion from the Republic of Ireland.

Hendry's defeat in the final was his first loss in the World Championship since 1991, which ended his record of 29 consecutive Crucible victories.

Alan Chamberlain refereed his first and only World Championship final. He was the first referee since Jim Thorpe in 1984 to officiate a debut final. All finals up to this year were officiated by either John Williams, Len Ganley or John Street.

World Championship (20 Apr - 6 May 1996)
Final Scotland Stephen Hendry (a) 18-12 England Peter Ebdon (a) Head to head
Stephen Hendry won his sixth World Championship by defeating Peter Ebdon 18-12, equalling the modern-day record of Steve Davis and Ray Reardon. This was Hendry's fifth consecutive title, another record for the modern era.

The final is the only time in Crucible history that the world champion did not take the last shot of the championship. Needing snookers, Peter Ebdon missed a shot and left Stephen Hendry a simple pot, but decided to concede the match rather than let Hendry continue.

Legendary BBC commentator Ted Lowe retired after the conclusion of the final.

World Championship (14-30 Apr 1995)
Final Scotland Stephen Hendry (a) 18-9 England Nigel Bond (a) Head to head
Stephen Hendry won his fifth world title, his fourth consecutive title, breaking Steve Davis' previous Crucible record of three.

Hendry's 12 centuries in the tournament beat the record of 10 set by Joe Davis in 1946 and equalled his own record for a ranking event, set at the 1994 UK Championship.

Street refereed his fifth and last World Championship final (between 1980 and 1995).

Hendry won his third consecutive world title and his fourth in five years. This achievement was all the more remarkable because he played every match after the first round with a broken elbow.

This was White's fifth consecutive final appearance, his fourth against Hendry, and his sixth overall. In the decider, White was leading 37-24 but missed a black off the spot, and Hendry cleared up. This was White's last appearance in a World Championship final and the closest he ever came to winning the tournament.

The third time since the championship moved to the Crucible, and to date the last, that the title was settled in the afternoon with a session to spare. The previous two were in 1983 and 1989.

Ganley refereed his last of four World Snooker Championship finals since 1983, including 1990 when Stephen Hendry became the youngest World Champion. Another career highlights were the 1983 UK Championship final between Alex Higgins and Steve Davis and Ronnie O'Sullivan's fastest 147 against Mick Price in the first round of 1997 World Championship.
